Informing People, Transforming Lives
Empowering the Zomi refugee community in Malaysia through focused projects and partnerships
Zomi Association of Malaysia (ZAM) undertakes various projects to address the urgent needs of Zomi refugees and vulnerable people in Malaysia. Our initiatives focus on healthcare access, education, documentation, social welfare, and economic empowerment.
Working in partnership with UNHCR, IOM, local NGOs, and international supporters, we develop sustainable solutions to improve living conditions and create opportunities for integration and self-sufficiency within the Malaysian context.

Ongoing initiatives supporting our community
April 2022 - Present
Our Mobile Health Clinic travels to areas with concentrated Zomi refugee populations, providing basic health screenings, medical consultations, and health education. The clinic operates monthly in three locations around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, serving those with limited access to healthcare facilities.
January 2023 - Present
This initiative provides essential computer skills training for both adults and children in the Zomi refugee community. Using our computer lab at the Zomi Education Center, participants learn basic computer operations, internet safety, communication tools, and digital job skills to enhance their educational and employment opportunities.
September 2022 - Present
Our Women's Handicraft Initiative trains Zomi women in traditional and modern craft techniques, helping them develop economic independence through skill-building. Participants create textiles, accessories, and household items that are sold through our partner network, providing sustainable income for vulnerable women and their families.
Ongoing
This critical project assists Zomi refugees with their UNHCR registration process, helping them navigate the complex documentation requirements. Our trained volunteers provide translation services, interview preparation, case follow-up, and liaison support with UNHCR Malaysia, ensuring improved access to protection and essential services.
Providing educational opportunities for refugee children since 2015
The Zomi Education Center is our flagship project, offering formal and non-formal education to Zomi refugee children who lack access to Malaysia's mainstream education system. The center provides a safe learning environment, qualified teachers, and a comprehensive curriculum covering mathematics, science, languages, arts, and cultural studies.
The center has grown from a small classroom with 20 students to a fully-equipped facility serving 250 students across different age groups. With dedicated classrooms, a library, and computer facilities, we're empowering the next generation through education.
Past initiatives that have made a lasting impact
March 2020 - December 2021
During the height of the pandemic, our COVID-19 Emergency Response project provided essential support to vulnerable Zomi families. The initiative included distribution of food packages, hygiene supplies, PPE, health information in Zomi language, and emergency financial assistance to those who lost income due to lockdowns.
The project successfully ensured basic needs were met during the crisis period, prevented hunger among the most vulnerable cases, and helped families comply with health guidelines by providing necessary supplies and information.
April 2020 - June 2022
When physical classes were suspended during the pandemic, our Remote Learning Initiative ensured educational continuity for Zomi refugee children. The project included development of take-home learning materials, training teachers in remote education methods, and providing basic tablets to students without devices.
The initiative prevented major learning disruptions, with 85% of students maintaining educational progress during school closures. The project has evolved into our current Digital Literacy Program as in-person classes resumed.
January 2021 - August 2021
Our Community Health Survey project conducted a comprehensive assessment of health needs, conditions, and access to healthcare among Zomi refugees in Malaysia. The research documented prevalent health issues, barriers to care, and gaps in services, creating a valuable resource for healthcare planning.
The survey findings directly informed the development of our Mobile Health Clinic project and helped secure funding for targeted healthcare interventions. The data continues to guide our medical services and advocacy efforts.
